Tata in the Community

Since the Tata group was formed more than 150 years ago, it has served as the custodian of public good, dedicated to making a positive social impact.
66% of Tata Sons' equity is held by the Tata Trusts and dividends flow directly to support the philanthropic work of the Trusts. Over the past century and a half,
the Tata group has calibrated its mission to address India's most urgent needs. Check the carousel below to access sector-specific stories and initiatives.

Education

education Through our history, we have championed initiatives to ensure access to quality education for all, while building some of India's finest institutions.

Transforming Education

The Tata Trusts' strategy of convergence in directing education programmes for backward regions and communities is enabling it to achieve a greater scale and impact, thereby making the Trusts a key literacy stakeholder in India's education ecosystem.
Masti Ki Pathshala is a residential bridge course (RBC) for all-round development of street children and child labourers with the goal of making Jamshedpur a child-labour free city.

The project started in 2016 with a school for 100 boys with a lot of roadblocks and pushback.

A new home

"This is not a programme for poor children. This is a programme for children who face the worst forms of child labour. It is not a very well-understood concept," explains Sourav Roy, Chief, CSR, Tata Steel. "Data was not the strong suit of this project. There is no census of the children exposed to this sort of child labour. The first step was to understand and convey to others that Jamshedpur has this problem.

The second was a lack of template, and the third was convincing the kids.
Adarsh Gupta, Manager, Masti Ki Pathshala, and one of those who convinced Gita and her brother, recalls, "Week on week, we'd go to the station, but the kids would not respond to us. Crowd management was also a problem. People would start questioning us or shooting videos."

He got branded as a "bacha chor" (kidnapper) in the process, a tag that came with considerable physical threat.

"It became smoother only after the Railway Police Force partnered with us and started managing the crowd," he says. "We also realised that we’d be unable to get any child to join the programme without convincing the gang leaders they were aligned with. There were worries about human trafficking, predators for organs, etc."

Healthcare

health

The Tata group pioneered cancer care in the country, is committed to improving maternal and neonatal health and has initiated several rural health development programmes.

Cancer care

Since it established the Tata Memorial Centre in 1941, the Tata group has been leading the fight against cancer in India, ensuring every patient has access to affordable, quality cancer care, through its centres and even the National Cancer Grid, which uses tachnology to establish standards in the preventation, diagnosis and treatment of the dieases.
  1. Develooping awareness programmes and behaviour change communication using sports and games, cultural programmes railies, storytelling, etc.
  2. Delivering preventive health at community level using the state health system, with the support of partner organisations.

Towards Water For All

The right to clean water is a fundamental right of every citizen, mandated in the United Nations Development Programme’s 6th Sustainable Development Goal, which seeks to ensure clean water and sanitation for all.

In these circumstances, the Tata Trusts stepped in to make a difference. The Tata Water Mission (TWM) has three critical components: water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH). The programme works towards rainwater conservation, sustainability of water sources and provision of clean water.

The mission is currently making good progress in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Leh.

Ninety percent of the time in rural India, women are responsible for water management, including the drudgery of walking long distances to fetch water, cleaning the house, etc. So we ensure that women’s requirements are considered in the design of the water system.

Environment

Environment We know that businesses can play a major role in protecting our planet. That is why Tata group companies actively endeavour to conserve at-risk species, and safeguard shrinking habitats and fragile ecosystems.

Tata Chemical Botanical Reserve

The Biodiversity Reserve Plantation Project is an ex-situ attempt by TCL for the conservation of local strains of native flora, especially threatened species, through the creation of a 250-acre botanical reserve at Mithapur.

In addition to the main reserve plantation, a series of smaller plantations will be replicated in the adjoining villages for the protection of village-level flora biodiversity. This will be done with the support of ECO Club members and the village community.

Towards Water For All

The Tata group is doing its bit to turn the tide with its wildlife conservation efforts. Several Tata companies have been working to help shelter and save at-risk species. Their efforts in this sphere range from creating secure habitats for animals and running awareness programmes for communities, to supporting breeding programmes and safeguarding natural ecosystems.

One of the most successful conservation programmes, is the 'Save the Whale Shark' campaign by Tata Chemicals in Gujarat. The largest fish on the planet, with a length of up to 60 feet, the majestic whale shark was once slaughtered for its oil and meat. This inhabitant of the Gujarat coastline is now protected by Tata Chemicals' campaign, launched in 2004 in partnership with the Wildlife Trust of India and the Gujarat State Forest Department. The campaign took an emotional route, naming the fish 'vhali', or dear one, and likening it to a prodigal daughter returning to her native place. Till date, 585 whale sharks have been rescued and released in into the sea.
